Neil Armstrong, the first man to set foot on the moon, was born on August 5, 1930, in Wapakoneta, Ohio. He was an American astronaut and aeronautical engineer who made history on July 20, 1969, when he became the first person to walk on the moon.
Armstrong's journey to the moon began in 1962 when he joined NASA. He was selected as the commander of the Apollo 11 mission, which was the first manned mission to land on the moon. On July 20, 1969, Armstrong and fellow astronaut Buzz Aldrin landed the Apollo Lunar Module on the moon's surface. Armstrong then took his historic first steps on the moon, uttering the famous words, "That's one small step for man, one giant leap for mankind."
Armstrong's achievement was a major milestone in human history. He became a national hero and an inspiration to people around the world. However, Armstrong was a humble man who shunned the fame that came with his accomplishment. He continued to work as an astronaut until he retired in 1971.
