Early Life and Career
Neil Armstrong was born on August 5, 1930, in Wapakoneta, Ohio. He developed a passion for aviation at a young age and earned his pilot's license at just 15 years old. After graduating from Purdue University with a degree in aeronautical engineering, Armstrong joined the U.S. Navy and served as a naval aviator during the Korean War.
NASA Career
After leaving the Navy, Armstrong joined the National Advisory Committee for Aeronautics (NACA), which later became NASA. He became a research pilot and test pilot, contributing to the development of early space exploration technology. In 1962, Armstrong was selected by NASA to be an astronaut.
Apollo 11 and the Moon Landing
Armstrong's most famous accomplishment was his role in the Apollo 11 mission, which landed the first humans on the Moon. On July 20, 1969, Armstrong became the first person to set foot on the lunar surface, uttering the iconic words, "That's one small step for a man, one giant leap for mankind."
Later Life and Legacy
After the Apollo 11 mission, Armstrong retired from NASA and went on to pursue various business and academic endeavors. He became a professor of engineering at the University of Cincinnati and served on numerous government and advisory boards related to space exploration. Armstrong passed away on August 25, 2012, at the age of 82, leaving behind a legacy as one of the most influential figures in human history.
