Recent research reveals that Google's AI-generated overviews have become increasingly scarce in trending news searches. According to data collected by BrightEdge and reported by Search Engine Land, AI Overviews now appear in just 39% of trending searches.
In June 2024, Google significantly reduced the visibility of AI Overviews, dropping from 84% to a mere 15%. This shift follows user feedback indicating dissatisfaction with the feature, which led to a decline in search result satisfaction.
The report indicates that AI Overviews are primarily absent from trending news searches, with a staggering 961 keywords not triggering any AI-generated summaries. This decline, coupled with the reduction in overall visibility, suggests that Google is reconsidering the role of AI in its search results.
Despite the scarcity of AI Overviews, Google continues to emphasize generative AI's potential in the search experience. The company's "Generative AI in Search" initiative aims to leverage AI to streamline the search process, potentially reducing the need for conventional search queries.
